NANS PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT COMENDS EARLY BUDGET PRESENTATION, SEEKS MORE FUNDING AND MONITORING FOR EDUCATION BUDGET.
Student leader and young philanthropist, Comrade Alabi has urged stakeholders and the rest of the citizenry to pay close attention to the education sector of the Nation. He said this in reaction to the presentation of the 2020 Budget by President Muhammadu Buhari before the joint session of the National Assembly.
In a statement on friday, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Presidential hopeful expressed his hopes at the prospects for the Educational Sector going by the indices presented by the Proposed Expenditure for Education in 2020.
"The early submission of the Budget is laudable and the proposed 48 billion for Capital Expenditure in the Education Sector is a modest proposition which in my opinion appears to be what something good can be achieved from. It's not the best it can be because education is one of the basic affairs that should be considered as beyond a necessity. The developed world progresses from its huge investment into education, therefore nations like great potential like Nigeria should also give a lot to educating it's citizenry."
The former chapter President and one time National Public Relations Officer of All Nigeria United Nations Students and Youth Association ANUNSA, further said "However, it's is not always only about how much is budgeted, adequate implementation of the expenditure is another area that is key to ensuring that the budget works it's purpose. Before now we have had budgetary allocations for the educational sector, however the inability to properly monitor the implementation of the budgets via projects has left so many as underperforming. Nevertheless I believe this administration is prepared to monitor spending, and I similarly call on citizens and young Nigerians to help in monitoring the budget. The success of this budget will be an improved educational sector to the benefit of thr Country."
Comrade Kayode Alabi further identified Educational reforms as indispensable and necessary, in order to break the bounds of inferior practices and achievements in the educational sector.
He said " we must prepare ourselves for reforms in the educational sector, as this is one of the ways through which the budget would get the space to function. These reforms have to occur at the certain areas encompassed in the educational sector. The Basic, Secondary and Tertiary departments of the educational sector as well as the professionalism of the workforce, need adjustments to improve the educational system of the country."
As he concluded his statement, he reasserted the need for concerted efforts to work out the best way the system of education in Nigeria can be made to function.
