The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded its screening of aspirants vying for offices across the state at the upcoming 2021 Delta State Local Government Council Elections. The process which began on the 21st of December was concluded yesterday 24th December 2020, with aspirants in their hundreds visiting the party secretariat to participate in the exercise.
In his remarks, the Party’s Legal Adviser and screening committee member, Barr Valentine Onojeghuo affirmed that indeed the process had ended. “Today(yesterday) the APC Concluded its screening of aspirants and it was a satisfactory one. We received the nomination forms submitted by aspirants for chairmanship and councillorship positions, as well as scrutinized the documents submitted. It has been a very encouraging affair and we have reason to look positive.”
The Chairman of the Committee Chief Adelabu Bodjor Esq, also expressed satisfaction with the process. “I think we can say there will definitely be a contest from the APC’s end. The screening wasn’t complicated but all inclusive, and we received no complaints about the process. Aspirants are now preparing for the next stage of the process.”
In his remarks the Director of Admininstration, Mr Dunkwu Paul gave statistics of the exercise. “So far, the number of aspirants who picked up the nomination forms has come close to 2,000. This includes those who sent representatives to the party secretariats to obtain the forms. From the statistics available, the primaries would indeed be keenly contested as there are wards that have more than 5 aspirants for the councillorship seat. Some areas where we see this occur are Ethiope East and West, Aniocha North, Udu and some others."
Speaking further, Mr Dunkwu emphasized that all that was needed was a free and fair council election. “I think from henceforth we need to ensure that the elections are indeed free from inteference of the Government, as well as demand that the Delta State Electoral Commission (DSIEC) remains impartial.”
Having concluded this stage, the party is therefore set to hold its primaries between the 28th – 30th December 2020.
Notable amongst the aspirants who took part in the process include Mr Chike Juluga, Mr Ejiro Etaghene (Aide to NEXIM Bank Exec Director), Builder Izu Aghafiena, Comr Marcus Uba (Lodbroke), Laura Baker, Hon Ekene Asiagwu Henry (APC’s only Councillor), Comrade Emmanuel Oweazim, Comr Akpoveta Solomon, Comr Chiedu Osemenam, Mr White Ghavwan Ofuafo etc.
