by Ikechukwu Chukwudi (Abuja)
Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) 2020 Convention Planning Committee, Comrade Abubakar Barde has assured stakeholders and aspirants of a credible process that will bring a new leadership to the association.
Speaking to newsmen during the Presidential debate organized by the Nigerian Students Debate Group, the soft-spoken student leader emphasized the resolve of the CPC to ensure credibility and fairness in the convention. "I want to reassure Nigerian Students of our committment to a process that is trustworthy, free, fair and credible. The essence of this convention is to give Nigerian students a leadership that is of popular consent.
No one elegible voter in this convention who has been duly registered and accredited will be denied his franchise."
Reacting to rumors of division, Comrade Barde stated that NANS remained united and the convention he has been chosen to preside over was authentic.
"As you can see, all stakeholders, Students Union Presidents and the generality of Nigerian Students are represented here to take part in this exercise. I must commend the heroic move by Comrade Patrick Afubera, who stood with legality and ensured that there was no division amongst us."
He further urged all interest parties to conduct themselves in order, decency and responsibility, insisting that all would be given a level playing field.
"It is important that we conduct ourselves decently and with responsibility, so as not to give fifth columnists an opportunity to forment trouble. So far the process has been applauded in various quarters as credible and commendable, I bellieve that at the end we would all be satisfied with the outcome.
As you can see, this is the first time aspirants are debating in a NANS Convention, therefore I think we all should know from observation that there is a sincere effort to do the right thing.
