NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ENGAGES EFCC TO COMBAT INTERNET FRAUD.

The National Association of University Students (NAUS), under the leadership of President Obaji Marshall, recently embarked on a proactive engagement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to address the pressing issue of internet fraud among Nigerian youths.

NAUS President (l) Comr Marshall Obaji with the EFCC Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede.

During the working visit to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, President Obaji Marshall emphasized the importance of empowering youths to deter them from engaging in criminal activities. He stated, "An idle mind is the Devil’s workshop. To combat internet fraud effectively, we must first engage and empower our youths."

The discussions centered on several key initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration between NAUS and the EFCC:
1. Annual Orientation Program: NAUS proposed an annual orientation program for new students, where the EFCC would send a resource person to educate students on the dangers of internet fraud. This initiative aims to shift students' focus towards productive endeavors.

2. Creation of a Student Desk Officer: NAUS suggested establishing a Student Desk Office within the EFCC to enhance communication and engagement with the student community. This initiative draws inspiration from similar setups in other agencies, fostering a conducive environment for dialogue and collaboration.

3. Tech Summit: Recognizing the transformative potential of technology, NAUS proposed organizing a Tech Summit to empower students with relevant skills. The summit aims to equip students with marketable skills in the tech industry, steering them away from illicit activities.
4. Employment Opportunities: NAUS advocated for employment opportunities for graduates within the EFCC. This initiative seeks to provide meaningful employment opportunities for youths, thereby reducing unemployment and mitigating the allure of crime.

5. Addressing Security Concerns: NAUS raised concerns about late-night raids on student hostels, emphasizing the need to distinguish between legitimate operations and criminal impersonations. Enhancing security protocols can safeguard students from potential risks and vulnerabilities.

In response, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of EFCC, commended NAUS's proactive approach and appointed Mrs. Aishat Muhammed to oversee the implementation of the Student Desk initiative. Additionally, he expressed support for the proposed orientation program and assured collaboration on employment opportunities.

While highlighting the constraints of the EFCC's budgetary allocations, Mr. Olukoyede reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to professionalism and collaboration with relevant agencies to organize programs effectively.

NAUS commends the EFCC for its commitment to addressing internet fraud and looks forward to fruitful collaboration in achieving these initiatives. Together, we strive towards a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
